How to Create and Add a Hardwood Cap

This tutorial will demonstrate one way to add an intelligent hardwood cap to an adjustable shelf.  This process will involve many aspects of Cabinet Vision: the part catalog, material schedules, assembly editor, and the UCS wizard.

1. From the opening screen, in the Catalogs Group of the Main Ribbon Bar, go to Part Catalog.  In the Part Catalog Editor, hit the “+” next to Assembly and then select Banding.  At the bottom left of the window, hit the Add A Part button, select Add Banding and then choose one of the options that becomes active.  (For this example I will select S_BNDH)  Then hit OK.

In the Description column, rename this part to whatever you want to see on your cut list and then click into another field and hit OK.

2. Next, Material Schedules in the Catalogs Group, and select Assembly Parts.  Hit the “+” next to Banding, you will see your new part in this section.  Right click on your new banding and hit Select Material; choose the appropriate material for the schedule you are working in.  Repeat this process for each of your material schedules.

3. Now, start a new job, draw a wall, and place an assembly on that wall.  Take the assembly to the Assembly editor and to the plan orthographic view of the assembly.  (If the assembly does not have a shelf in it, go to the interior section view and add an adjustable shelf.)

A. Select the adjustable shelf, right click on it, and select Edge Banding.
B. Select the new edge banding that you created.
C. Then select the edge of the shelf that you want to have that banding assigned to.

The edge you click on will change to the color indicated next to the banding selection on the left side of the screen.

 4. Look at the End orthographic view, you will notice that the edge banding is that same thickness as the shelf material.  You will need to add a User Created Standard (UCS) to give this banding a “drop” edge.

5. 5. To create the UCS, go to the Utilities Tab of the Ribbon Bar and select User Created Standards.  Create a new UCS by selecting the page icon in the upper left of the window, this opens up the UCS Wizard.  In Step 1 of 9 you will need to:

A. Name the UCS
B. Select the Type – for this UCS you are going to Modify A Part
C. Finally, select the part you want to modify – for this example the new banding I had created was called Hardwood Cap.

6. Hit Next.  The next several screens give you ways to limit when the UCS will take affect.  Because you will have to add the banding to the shelves where you want it to appear, you really do not have to set up too many limitations within the UCS itself.  Move forward until you reach Step 8 of 9.  In this step you will be telling the program how to modify the part that you selected in the previous window.  For this example it is the width of the banding that needs to be adjusted.  As I stated in the name of this UCS, I want the cap to be 1 ½” so I will select the Width parameter, Is Equal To under How To Modify, and type in 1 ½ in the Value field.

7.  Then hit Finish and close the User Created Standards window.  When you go back to the End Orthographic view, you should see that the shelf cap that you added is no longer the same thickness as the shelf material but is, instead 1 ½” as the UCS has instructed it.
